BHE Funded Marker-based Test for Fanconi Syndrome Now Available
July 14, 2007 - The Basenji Health Endowment, AKC Canine Health Foundation and Dr. Gary S. Johnson of the University of Missouri announced today the completion of a linked marker DNA test for Fanconi Syndrome in Basenjis. The test is $60.00 US, which includes recording results with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals public DNA database. The linked marker test is an interim tool while Dr. Johnson continues his search for the precise genetic cause of Fanconi syndrome.

Test submission may be made through the Canine Phenome Project (CPP) starting today by following these simple steps.

  • Enroll your dog(s) in the CPP at www.CaninePhenome.org
  • Complete the questionnaires and print the DNA Sample Submission Form, which must be included with the requisite blood sample (if no sample is already logged).
  • Submit blood sample to the University of Missouri if needed.
  • Print a Linked Marker Test Form from your dog's CPP entry and follow the form's instructions
  • Please indicate if the dog will be bred this season, so samples can be prioritized (an estimated 150 samples per week can be processed).
  • Include $60.00 U.S. per test, payable to the University of Missouri.

Test results will be sent via email, followed by a hard copy report explaining the results. The possible results are:

  • Probable Normal - two normal chromosomes (one from each parent).
  • Probable Carrier - one normal chromosome and one mutant chromosome.
  • Probable Affected - two mutant chromosomes (one from each parent).
  • Indeterminate - test result does not clearly show either normal or mutant chromosomes, probably due to the natural process of gene recombination.
To minimize the chance of producing Fanconi affected offspring, it is recommended that each mating include at least one dog with a Probable Normal test result.

Questions About the Test
