BHE Funds Marker-based Test for Fanconi Syndrome
April 2007 - The Basenji Health Endowment has directly funded Dr. Gary Johnson of the University of Missouri to develop a marker-based test for Fanconi Syndrome in Basenjis while continuing to fund his research into locating the actual mutation.

Marker-based tests use nearby DNA, or markers, that are inherited with the mutation to indicate affected, carrier or clear status. They do not identify the specific mutation.

Dr. Johnson expects development of the marker-based test to take approximately three weeks once started and estimates that his facility can process 250 tests per week once operational. Test results will be transmitted electronically to expedite reporting.

The goal is to have the marker-based test available prior to the 2007-2008 breeding season.

A complete report on Health Research and future projects can be viewed at the BHE website.
